Foldable moon globe held together with magnets.
The Moon is the fifth-largest natural satellite in our Solar System and the only extraterrestrial body that has ever been visited by humankind. Its gravitational pull controls our tides, its cycles, inspired our calendars and its mysteries are the centre of many folktales and mythologies.
Designer Brendan Ravenhill has configured the Moon into a foldable magnetic cube octahedron, representation of Earth’s only satellite that easily transitions from flat to three dimensional. Fold it to form a three dimensional moon or unfold to reveal a flattened moonscape.
The Folding Moon uses photography from the Moon's surface from NASA's public domain archive. "We spent countless hours going through NASA's databases until we found the perfect combination of Moon views. Working with a cartographer we turned the NASA images into a projection that we could render on the square and triangle faces." - Brendan Ravenhill
